The best RC car for beginners: 8 first trucks worth buying

A good first RC car is ready to run, slows down while you learn, and has parts you can actually buy when you break it. These eight do all three, at every budget.

How we pick Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

The best RC car for most beginners is the Arrma Mojave GROM: a tough little 4x4 that comes with a battery and Smart charger, lets you cap the speed at 50% or 75% while you learn, and is backed by Arrma's parts supply. If you'd rather start with Traxxas, the Bandit XL-5 (NiMH battery and charger included) and the brushless Mini Maxx are the best ready-to-drive choices. On a tight budget, the HAIBOXING 18859 and DEERC 9309E are the best-selling entry hobby-grade trucks on Amazon.

How we picked these RC cars

We started with the best-selling hobby-grade cars and trucks on Amazon in the US, then filtered for what matters to a first-time owner. Evidence, checked October 3, 2026:

  • Real sales. The HAIBOXING 18859 and DEERC 9309E each showed 1,000+ purchases in the past month; the Arrma Mojave GROM 223S, 100+.
  • Owner ratings at scale. The DEERC 9309E has 14,000+ ratings and the HAIBOXING 18859 nearly 11,000.
  • What's in the box. Battery and charger included scored higher; we flag clearly when they're not.
  • Learning aids: training modes, throttle limiting and stability control.
  • Parts support from the brand, because every beginner breaks something.

This is a How we pick page: we compare manufacturer listings, manuals and owner feedback. We didn't drive these cars ourselves. How we research.

The brushed Mojave GROM ticks every beginner box. It arrives with a Spektrum 2S LiPo and Smart charger, so there's nothing else to buy. The SLT2 transmitter can limit speed to 50% or 75% while you learn, and the waterproof Spektrum servo and ESC mean wet grass won't end your day. The Bandit is the simplest way into Traxxas: a full-size 1/10 buggy with a NiMH battery and a USB-C charger in the box. NiMH is the most forgiving battery chemistry for a first car, and the XL-5's Training Mode cuts power while you learn. Traxxas parts are on hobby-shop walls across the US, so a broken arm is a quick fix.

Traxxas Mini Maxx Brushless

The Mini Maxx gives you brushless power in a backpack-sized monster truck, with the battery and charger included. Traxxas built it with 1/10-scale driveline parts in a small chassis, which helps it survive beginner crashes. At 30+ mph it's quick without being terrifying.

Beginner buying guide

Hobby-grade vs toy-grade

Hobby-grade cars have proportional controls (a little trigger means a little throttle), standard batteries and individual spare parts. Toy-grade cars are cheaper but are usually thrown away when they break. If you're buying for a young child, a toy-grade car is often the better choice; see the best RC car for kids.

RTR means ready to run, mostly

Ready-to-run trucks arrive built with a transmitter, but "battery and charger not included" is common on Arrma 223S and Traxxas VXL models. Add them to the price. Building your own instead? Read RTR vs kit.

Hands on a pistol-grip RC transmitter
Proportional throttle and steering are what make hobby-grade cars controllable, and fun.

Brushed or brushless?

Brushed is cheaper and gentler; brushless is faster and lower-maintenance. A brushless truck with throttle limiting gives you both. Full explanation in brushless vs brushed.

Battery safety

Most of these trucks use LiPo batteries. The manufacturer rules are simple and non-negotiable: use a LiPo charger, charge in a fire-resistant container or LiPo bag on a non-flammable surface, never leave it unattended, turn on low-voltage cutoff, and store packs at storage voltage (Traxxas Battery Basics, Spektrum lithium battery safety). The Bandit's NiMH pack is the low-stress alternative. More in LiPo vs NiMH.

What to buy with your first RC car

Your first repair is a rite of passage. Good parts support turns it into a ten-minute job.

The bottom line

Buy the Arrma Mojave GROM if you want the easiest, most complete first truck. Choose the Traxxas Bandit XL-5 for a NiMH, battery-included Traxxas, or the Mini Maxx for brushless in the box. On a budget, the HAIBOXING 18859 is the safest bet under $100. And if speed isn't the point, a TRX-4M crawler is the most relaxing way into the hobby.

Questions people ask

What is the best RC car for a beginner?
For most adult beginners, the Arrma Mojave GROM (brushed version): it's a small 4x4 that arrives with a 2S LiPo and Smart charger, has speed limiting at 50% or 75%, and Arrma parts are easy to get. If you want a battery and charger in a Traxxas, choose the Bandit XL-5 or the brushless Mini Maxx.
Should a beginner get a brushless RC car?
It's fine if the truck has throttle limiting or a training mode, like the brushless Arrma GROM 223S with DSC and throttle limiting. Otherwise, a brushed truck is easier to learn on, cheaper to break and still plenty of fun. You can always buy a faster second truck.
What's the difference between toy-grade and hobby-grade RC cars?
Hobby-grade cars use proportional steering and throttle, standard batteries, and sell individual replacement parts, so you can repair and upgrade them. Toy-grade cars are cheaper and simpler, but when something breaks you usually replace the whole car. All eight picks here are hobby-grade or entry hobby-grade.
How much should I spend on my first RC car?
Budget hobby-grade trucks like the HAIBOXING 18859 and DEERC 9309E cost well under $100 and include batteries. Brand-name starters from Arrma and Traxxas cost more but have far better parts support. Always compare the total cost with a battery and charger included.
Is Traxxas or Arrma better for beginners?
Both are good. Traxxas's advantage is parts on hobby shop walls everywhere and more models with a battery and charger included. Arrma's advantage is toughness for the money. Our Traxxas vs Arrma guide compares them truck by truck.
Are RC cars with LiPo batteries safe for beginners?
Yes, when you follow the manufacturer rules: use the correct LiPo charger, charge in a fire-resistant container or LiPo bag on a non-flammable surface, never leave a charging battery unattended, and store packs at storage voltage. If that sounds like too much, start with a NiMH truck like the Traxxas Bandit XL-5.
